Learn Crochet from Scratch: A Beginner-Friendly Guide to Unlock Your Crafting Joy

10 mar 2025 HOOKSTH

Hey craft lovers!

Today, we’ll explore essential crochet stitches that form the foundation of countless projects. Let’s begin with step-by-step guides to mastering these stitches.

1. Single Crochet (X)

The single crochet is a fundamental stitch. Follow these steps:

  • Create a chain stitch (CH).
  • Insert your hook from front to back into the second chain from the hook.
  • Yarn over and pull through the first loop, leaving two loops on the hook.
  • Yarn over again and pull through both loops.
  • Repeat for each chain.

Finishing a Row:

  • Chain 1 (turning chain; does not count as a stitch).
  • Insert the hook into the first single crochet of the row and work a single crochet in each stitch.
  • For the last stitch, work into the last stitch of the row, not the turning chain.

2. Slip Stitch (SL)

This short stitch connects stitches or moves yarn:

  • Insert the hook from front to back into the desired stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull through both the inserted loop and the loop on the hook.
  • One loop remains on the hook.

3. Half Double Crochet (T)

  • Create a chain stitch (CH).
  • Yarn over, then insert the hook into the third chain from the hook.
  • Pull the yarn through the chain (three loops on the hook).
  • Yarn over and pull through all three loops.

Finishing a Row:

  • Chain 2 (turning chain).
  • Skip the first stitch and work a half double crochet in each stitch of the previous row.
  • Work the last stitch into the top of the turning chain.
